The Battle of the Tenaru, as shown in The Pacific, was one of the first brutal lessons of the Guadalcanal campaign. In August 1942, nearly a thousand Japanese soldiers launched a night attack on the Marine lines along the Ilu River — and by morning, almost none were left alive. Fewer than twenty surrendered, revealing just how fierce and unforgiving the Pacific War would become.
The Pacific captures the chaos and desperation of that night, but the real battle was every bit as intense.
