The trailer’s best bit is saved for last – i.e. Rosalina’s introduction.
After peering out from behind a giant set of doors, we see Rosalina look up at a giant, three-legged robot. Mario fans will immediately recognize this as Megaleg, one of many bosses you battle in Super Mario Galaxy. Based on the clip we later see of Bowser Jr in some form of cockpit, I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s the one piloting it here.
Anyway, because Rosalina is such a badass, she makes light work of Megaleg with her star-shaped wand and star portal superpowers. Standing smugly as a ruined Megaleg crashes to the ground behind her, we hear the notes of one Gusty Garden Galaxy play out, too – yet another reference to the Galaxy videogame series.
The final clip of Rosalina, which is shown before Meledandri reveals Larson will voice her, sees the cosmic heroine sitting down to read a story to the fully-grown and baby Lumas under her care. It’s a pretty funny scene, which sees a red Luma try and lead a chant to force Rosalina to tell them the story about “the plumbers” (i.e. Mario and Luigi) again.
Most interesting of all, though, is that this clip honors similar scenes in the Nintendo switch versions of the Galaxy games. Indeed, the Switch editions show Rosalina recounting events of how she became the Lumas’ protector-in-chief.
