“Ready Player One”: Adventure in the Virtual World
In 2045, the real world is severely polluted and dilapidated, and people indulge in a virtual reality game called “Oasis” to escape reality. On his deathbed, the founder of the game, James Halliday, announced that he would leave his huge wealth and control of “Oasis” to the first player who passed the three levels in the game and found his hidden Easter eggs, triggering a global treasure hunt craze. Players known as the “Oasis Top Five” became the favorites to grab treasures.
Young player Wade Watts, who lives in a dilapidated trailer, has emerged in “Oasis” with his in-depth understanding of Halliday and superb game skills. He teamed up with his friend Aichi and the newly acquainted Artemis, Dadong, and Xiu to embark on an egg-hunting journey together.
The first level is a car race on a track that recreates the scene of “Back to the Future” in 1985, with a bronze egg at the finish line. The contestants not only have to avoid obstacles such as mechanical dinosaurs and Godzilla, but also have to deal with the interference of the “six-armed giant” sent by Nolan Sorrento, the number one villain in the game, and his company IOI. Wade found that the key was to drive in the opposite direction, and finally succeeded in getting through and getting the bronze egg.
The second level tested Halliday’s emotional regret. Everyone came to the horror hotel that reproduced the scene of “The Shining”. Because of his understanding of Halliday, Wade knew that he was lonely because of missing love. He deliberately broke the rules and let the heroine kiss him, successfully passed the level, and got the golden key and silver egg.
In order to seize the Easter egg, Sorrento kidnapped Artemis to threaten Wade to hand over the key. Wade successfully rescued Artemis with the help of his friends. The last level was in a virtual dance floor, requiring players to dance to a song that Halliday had never danced before. Wade found that Halliday had never danced because of his inferiority complex, so he stayed where he was and finally got the golden egg.
After winning, Wade announced that the “Oasis” would be closed every Tuesday and Thursday to allow people to return to real life, because he understood that although the virtual world is full of temptations, real life is irreplaceable, and the real “easter eggs” are the real emotions and experiences between people.
